BCHD regulates on-site sewage systems where public sewer is not available. Their official page is the best starting point for homeowners and contractors.

How a septic system works (BCHD summary)
- Septic tank — buried watertight tank; solids settle (sludge), grease floats (scum); partial breakdown of waste.
- Baffles / T-outlet / screens — keep solids out of the drainfield (filters/screens recommended).
- Drainfield / drywell — soil finishes treating wastewater. Overloading can flood, back up, or surface sewage.
- Reserve area — keep space for a future replacement field if the current one fails.
Pumping recommendation
BCHD recommends having your on-site septic system pumped about every three years. Regular pumping can prevent costly repairs and protect surface water.

Septic permit for install / repair / replace
Homeowners or contractors must file with the health department to put in (or typically replace/alter) a septic system. AHS helps you understand when a permit is needed and coordinates the dig after the county path is clear.
Ordinance reminder (§7.1)
Permit required to construct, alter, extend, or replace a sewage disposal system.
Often no construction permit only for repairing/replacing the sewer between the house and tank, or tank and final disposal. When unsure, call BCHD or AHS first.

Do
- Learn where your tank and drainfield are
- Have the system inspected / pumped on a regular schedule (BCHD suggests ~every 3 years)
- Call a professional when you have problems
- Keep records of repairs and pump-outs
- Conserve water to avoid overloading
- Divert roof drains, footing drains, and sump pumps away from the system
Don’t
- Ever enter a septic tank (toxic gases can kill)
- Park or drive over the system
- Plant trees/shrubs over the drainfield (grass is preferred)
- Dig or build over the drainfield
- Make repairs without required health department permits
- Leave the tank lid off

New septic systems
New installation quotes — Health Department permit first
We only quote new septic installations from a Health Department permit recommendation (soil type, system type, and sizing). Without that permit package, we cannot give a firm new-system price.
Step 1 — Upload your Health Department permit
Before we prepare a new installation quote, please send us your Berrien County (or Cass County) Health Department soil evaluation / sewage permit recommendation. That document tells us bedrooms, soil type, and the system the county approved.

Southwest Michigan soils are glacial and highly mixed. This table is a general guide — not a soil test. Only a Health Department soil evaluation decides what system your lot can use.

- Note gate codes, dogs, and soft yard conditions
- Tell us if the tank has no riser (extra locate/dig may apply)

- MISS DIG 811 — public utilities must be located before excavation
- Confirm BCHD permit if work is more than a simple line repair
- Mark private lines you know (irrigation, electric to shed, etc.)
- Keep kids/pets away from open trenches
- Expect temporary yard restoration (seed/grade per quote)
