Permit or no permit? (§7.1)
Permit required to construct, alter, extend, or replace a sewage disposal system in Berrien County.
Permit not required only to repair or replace the sewer between the house and the septic tank, or between the septic tank and the final disposal area (for example, a crushed tank-to-drywell line).
Tank, drywell, field, and full-system work almost always need Berrien County Health Department approval. AHS helps you sort the path before we dig.

Isolation & construction highlights
- Septic tank typically 50 ft from wells; 10 ft from lot lines; 5 ft from basements; 50 ft from lakes/streams.
- Tanks shall be properly baffled; effluent filters may be required; deep tanks need manhole access within 18" of grade (risers).
- Minimum residential tank often 750 gallons (unless Health Officer authorizes otherwise).
- Toilet waste sewers typically 4-inch pipe with proper grade; Schedule 40 near wells.
- All domestic waste — including laundry — is sewage and must go to an approved system.
- Installers must be registered with the Health Department (§8.1).
- Permits expire in 12 months and are not transferable.
Always follow the distances and notes on your actual BCHD permit. Municipal rules may be stricter.
